What is neck and shoulder pain?
Neck related shoulder pain can be defined as pain that is felt in and around the shoulder but is in fact caused by the neck.
This may be felt between the neck and shoulder, along the inside of the shoulder blade and occasionally down the arm. This is different to normal shoulder pain, which is typically felt at the front or side of the shoulder.
Neck shoulder pain is usually aggravated more by neck movements or sustained positions rather than shoulder movement.
What causes neck and shoulder pain?
Neck shoulder pain is caused by the cervical spine, which is usually irritated.
The structures of the cervical spine that may be irritated include:
- Cervical Disc
- Cervical Facet Joint
- Cervical Nerve Root
- Cervical Muscles
How is neck shoulder pain treated?
Neck and shoulder pain treatment must be focused on the source of pain, which is in the neck.
This neck treatment may include:
- ‘Hands on Treatment’ of the Neck
- Neck Mobility Exercises
- Neck Strengthening Exercises
- Postural Retraining
- Activity Modification
- Heat Packs
- Medical Management including prescription medication and/or steroid injections
